Denver offers over 300 days of sunshine, four glorious seasons and a lifestyle that is second to none.  With an unemployment rate of 2.9% job opportunities are plentiful.   Its no wonder why 70,000 moved into Colorado over the last year.  Even with a challenging housing market, nothing a good real estate professional couldn't handle, the Denver Metro Area continues to top the lists of cities people are moving to.

Whether or not you decide to make Colorado your new home, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Altitude, Altitude, Altitude!  Denver sits at 5,280 feet or a mile above sea level.  This is where the nickname Mile High City comes from.  When transitioning to a life in Denver keep these things in mind:

  • Golf balls can travel 10% further
  • Alcohol has more of an effect - drinking lots of water helps this
  • Sunscreen is a must ALL YEAR LONG
  • STAY HYDRATED - Denver has a dry climate
  • Staying fit will be a challenge at first, but once you have adapted to the altitude, you will be in the best shape of your life!
  • Altitude sickness is a real thing - staying hydrated, limit alcohol and give yourself time to adjust.

Weather in Denver.  Have you ever heard the phrase, If you don't like the weather in Denver, wait 5 minutes?  The weather in Denver can change on a dime.  In one day, you could experience winter, spring and summer!  During the winter months, the city of Denver will receive snow, however due to the sunshine and altitude, it melts off quickly or snow removal equipment will have the roads ready for commuters.  Golfers moving into Denver will have to learn to swing with a winter coat, as the golf courses stay open ALL YEAR LONG.  Spring time can bring snow, rain and hail - sometimes in the same day.   However, trees and lawns come back to life after being dormant all winter.  Summer brings on average 80 degree days and mild evenings. Fall brings out the colors of Denver, with tress all around the city turning bright red, orange or yellow.  A day trip to the mountains during late September and October to see the Aspens change the color of a mountainside is a must.

Get to know and love the home teams.  Denver is a sports town, with six professional sports teams, there is something for everyone.  Choose to root for one or all!

  • Denver Broncos - football
  • Denver Nuggets - basketball
  • Colorado Avalanche - hockey
  • Colorado Rapids - soccer
  • Colorado Mammoth - lacrosse
  • Colorado Rockies - baseball

Legalized Marijuana.  Colorado was one of the first states to legalize marijuana.  It is important to know that there are several laws that surround its use.  Just to name a few.

  • You must be 21 years old to buy, posses or use marijuana
  • Adults 21 and older can only purchase and possess up to 1 ounce at a time
  • It is illegal to use marijuana in any form in public
  • It is illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana
  • Certain employers will perform drug tests and even though its legal, you may run into problems when applying for jobs.
  • Although marijuana is legal on the state level, it is still illegal at the Federal level.
